Antismacking or Smacking???

So I'm guessing a heap of people have been watching the news lately(or so I hope) and there has been a huge debate upon whether smacking should be banned (which is most likely going to happen) or if it shouldn't? Now there are the people who are for smacking saying that the only way to discipline a child is by giving him a firm slap (within reasonable force) and then the child learns their lesson and doesn't behave badly again. However there are the anti- smacking people who argue that smacking doesn't teach you to learn from your mistakes ,but instead it shows you how to try and not get caught the second time. There are also instances from the past which questions; what is reasonable force? Surely you have heard the case about the women who hit her baby with a fan belt resulting in its death.
Do you think that smacking should be banned or kept and if so do you think that reasonable force should be defined more clearly as it could vary in some cultures what "reasonable force is"
